SPRINGFIELD -- A suspected arson fire killed 15 horses in a barn at Lincoln Downs Race Track here early this morning, one day before the start of racing season.
Ten horses escaped the fire. The barn, a one story structure, had only a few remaining parts after the fire let up and was smoldered around noon.
The fire was shooting explosively out the center of the barn when the fire department arrived.
Thirteen thoroughbreds and two saddle horses died in the fire. Ten horses escaped, two of them with their backs ablaze.
While the fire started near the middle of the barn, the only electrical outlets were located at each end of the barn, making arson a great possibility for the causation of the fire. The electrical outlets and heaters were on the sides of the barn, track assistant manager Bernard Perry said. Fire officials are considering arson in their investigation.
Jockey Albert Ramos watched quietly as the workers cleaned the area. “Those are my best friends,” he said, looking away (you’d have to see this). “I feel like I want to cry.”
